"Lakeside rotates its #wetland among its four fields. When a field is returned to production after three years under water, Wenner said, its weeds and pests have been drowned; #soil health has improved; fewer chemical inputs are needed; and the field’s produce can be classified as organic, increasing its value."
#Rewilding #UK #Dartmoor #Desert
Not a Sahara desert, but abcent of life, unable to nurture a biodiverse life. But caused by an all to common culprit: extensive grazing of life stock. Eating whatever is left, and when that is gone grazed by a less particular stock... until it's dead.. So a desert.
What needs to be done to bring life back ? Because that's possible !
Firstly, stop the grazing. Cattle favours the sprouts [life beginnings] before it grows.
Secondly, retain water in the area. By artficial but natural means and by disrupt the man made drainage put there over the centuries.
And this is not about blaming farmers. It's about land management, and that's where farmer should [get to] play an important crucial role.
Since Britain left the EU the UK government has been rethinking farming and the incentives which they pay farmers and they've come up with ELMS [Environmental Land Management]. Farmers will be incentivized [they will be paid] to not only produce food but manage the land as well.

After, and before, the Elwah Dam was removed scientist worked closely together with the indigenous tribes; to study and restore the natural environment. Fighting extinction and giving Mother Nature a chance to revive itself, and therefor restoring a way of life.
In those ten years some unsuspected things happened, icreasing the awe of nature itself.

Ten years after the largest dam removal in history—on the Elwha River, in Washington State—scientists are chronicling an inspiring story of ecological rebirth. Recovering salmon populations are transferring critical nutrients from the ocean into the forests along the Elwha’s banks, enriching the entire ecosystem. The Elwha’s revival is encouraging advocates to push for the removal of many larger dams in the region, and in the rest of the world.

About a few extreme right billionair men who have the power to kill us, while we have the power to laugh at them.
Move away from monocultures. Ecology knows that nature grows back. Diversity is resilience. Ecosystems fight back and grow back so quickly.
My sad little lupine that got eaten down to the nub by deer has finally bloomed again!! She's doing her best!
The deer have stopped trying to eat the garden. I don't really do anything different. Maybe they've migrated for the season (I've only seen them around once in the past week, across in the field), or maybe they got the message to leave my sad plants alone. They've got enough problems with me as it is!
This small patch of waste ground next to a petrol station seems to have been reclaimed and sown with flowers.
The sign looks home-made, so hopefully it's not a cynical green washing attempt by Esso.
I'm hoping it's someone who just wanted it to look a bit nicer.

In a world without people, how fast would NYC fall apart? Here’s the timeline.
In a week, mold moves in. In a century, New York is a forest.
By Sarah Durn
Published Jun 5, 2025
"Imagine the ceaseless cacophony of New York City suddenly stopped. No sirens wailed. No cars zoomed. No subways rumbled beneath sidewalks. All eight million New Yorkers disappeared overnight.
"Now, imagine what would happen next. If no one’s around to sweep the sidewalks, weed Central Park, or turn the power grid on, nature would move in—and quick. Dandelions would spring up in asphalt cracks. Raccoons would move into abandoned apartments. Sidewalk trees would outgrow their planters.
"But just how swiftly would the city disappear beneath a curtain of green? We talked to architects and urban ecologists to map out a potential timeline.
"From Day 1 To Month 1: Plunged Into Darkness
"With no one to maintain the power grid, the Big Apple would go dark within a few days. The Milky Way would illuminate Midtown as light pollution disappears overnight. Without air conditioning and heat, 'you start getting weird temperatures inside the building. Mold starts to form on the walls,' says architect Jana Horvat of the University of Zagreb, who studies building decay.
"Some green energy projects in the city might stay lit for longer, such as the solar and wind-powered Ricoh Americas billboard in Times Square. Eventually, though, even the Ricoh billboard would go dark; not because the billboard would lose power, but because there would be no one to replace its LED lightbulbs.
"Without power, the pump rooms that clear out 13 million gallons of water daily from the subway would be useless, and the train tunnels would begin to flood. 'Probably this water would result in [the subway] being, you know, occupied by new species,' says Horvat. 'Some plants would start growing, some animals' would move in. Likely, species that already thrive in the subway—rats, cockroaches, pigeons, opossums—would be the first ones to take advantage of the human-free passages.
"Within the first month, the manicured lawns of Central and Prospect Park would grow wild and unkept. 'When you stop mowing a lawn, you get a meadow,' says botanist Peter Del Tredici, a senior research scientist emeritus at the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, who wrote a book on urban plant life. Within a month, dandelions, ragweed, and yellow nutsedge would start popping up in the now knee-high grasses of New York’s iconic parks. 'First, it’s herbaceous plants, but then, you know, you get trees and shrubs and vines,' says Tredici."

"Scotland's #endangered wildcats could be saved as part of a massive 800-square-mile rewilding plan across the Highlands. The new Affric Highlands charity has set out ambitious plans to regenerate native #woodland, #peatland and #riverside habitats and boost endangered species like wildcats, covering a sweeping stretch of the country from Loch Ness to the west coast.
"The group said it will work with local landowners to boost the local economy and make the region a hub for sustainable timber, fishing, farming, venison and wildlife tourism. Affric Highlands - whose emblem is a wildcat, also known as the '#HighlandTiger' - vowed to see the iconic animal flourish as it takes on the huge 30-year project."

Just a brag, but I've nearly eliminated my use of Kleenex since last year. I used to use 2-3 tissues a day, now it's zero most days.
It's ok to go slow. It's weird at first, feels gross or whatever, and the texture takes some getting used to. I just bought the hankies, decided to keep one close at all times, and only use it sometimes, but still used the tissues when I felt like it. Surprise, now that's most of the time. I get 4-5+ uses out of each one and have plenty to last till laundry day.
They're better than Kleenex in many ways, aside from saving the planet. I can keep one in my hoodie pocket and don't have to worry about it disintegrating or ending up in the wash. I also have different color ones for use as napkins.
You can get cheap good quality hankies from Amazon. I haven't found any elsewhere that I've been happy with and that are affordable. It might be a good moral trade-off to go Amazon in this case, because I haven't bought a new box of tissues in months. I'm willing to provide links to the ones I bought if you want. (The affordable ones I got from Etsy are smaller and already unraveling. They have better ones but too expensive for me.)
You can also make them out of old clothes. Iv'e seen advice on what's best to use. Some people really like flannel, say from PJs or sheets. I already did that for making cleaning rags.
It's kind of fun to figure out how to do things differently, how to fix things, make things out of other things, how to use less. It was intimidating the idea of switching my whole lifestyle all at once, and I've found it better to go slow and have fun. Pick one thing and try it for awhile.

🔎 ABOUT THIS PROJECT
Coral reefs are known as “the rainforests of the sea”. These vibrantly complex ecosystems harbour the highest biodiversity of any ecosystem globally. An estimated 25% of all marine species depend on reefs. They are also crucial for millions of people, providing food, livelihoods, resources and coastal protection.
Major threats, such as over-exploitation and climate change, are jeopardising the future of coral reefs. In the last few decades, sharp declines in reef cover have occurred worldwide. This is our first coral reef project to restore damaged reefs in the northern waters of Nusa Penida, Indonesia.
Our long-term goal is to improve resilience by enhancing connectivity of fragmented reefs whilst protecting and preserving endangered coral species. Led by our local team of expert divers and marine biologists passionate about the preservation of this marine ecosystem, we work with local people to promote positive community involvement in coral reef restoration.

More than 700,000 trees planted in Surrey
More than 700,000 trees have been planted in Surrey as the county council aims for 1.2 million saplings by 2030.
May 8, 2025
"In the past year, Surrey County Council said its initiative had created about 49,000 new trees and #hedgerows.
"This brings the total number of trees planted to 768,832 since 2019 – more than halfway to the county's target of planting one tree for every Surrey resident.
"A range of community projects have been supporting the challenge.
"Meanwhile, an orchard of 10 fruit trees was created at Goldsworth Park Medical Centre in #Woking as part of the #NHSForest scheme, which aims to transform green spaces within healthcare sites to improve health, #wellbeing and #biodiversity.
"Marisa Heath, Surrey County Council's cabinet member for environment, said: 'Trees play a vital role in enhancing the appearance of Surrey's green spaces, while also strengthening our climate resilience.
" 'We couldn't do this alone, so I thank all the partners, communities and residents who support this initiative. I encourage you to continue to do so to achieve our target for the benefit of our communities and future generations to come.' "

"...Sharpham’s most powerful response over the next five years is to continue to show #nature as a powerful restorative and preventive prescription to keep people healthy and resilient.
“If you look at the various crises we face – the biodiversity crisis, the climate crisis, the mental health crisis – we tend to think about them in silos,” said Carnell. “But they are all interrelated, so we need a much more coherent, holistic approach.”
"Approximately 70 percent of mammals are nocturnal but, like the badger, can no longer depend on the darkness of night to survive. As humans have increasingly encroached upon their territory, artificial light at night has followed."
