Researchers also noted that emissions from the richest 10% in major economies, such as the United States and China, caused a two to threefold increase in dangerous heat conditions across vulnerable tropical areas.
These hotspots include Southeast Asia, southern Africa, and other regions with limited resources to handle amplified environmental stress.

Extreme inequality between rich and poor is a feature of capitalism, an inevitable and desired result. Another feature is contemptible disregard for those less fortunate.
As the world continues heating up, millions or even billions of disadvantaged humans in the Global South will suffer the consequences of rampant consumerism and capitalist greed in the Global North.
This is all deliberate. It's not an accident.
That's how capitalism works: shift the damage of our lifestyles far away so we don't have to see it or think about it.

I don't have any problem with a market economy, per se, but I do have a BIG problem with #capitalism.
In my version of a market economy, people can own and run small companies, hire employees, set prices, make a profit... that's all fine. But they can't buy their competitors and either take them over or put them out of business. They can't open franchises, where they sell (or rent) the right to operate a different company with the same name. They're not allowed to buy their suppliers and create a conglomerate. They aren't permitted to grow so large that the market no longer operates fairly. And every business owner's wealth will be capped with a highly progressive tax structure (which is the price of using the commons to turn a profit).
In my version of state socialism, there is no accumulation of capital, and thus no capitalism. All large industries and large-scale services are socialized, owned by the people and managed by the state (or by worker cooperatives, where practical).
So, the marketplace as such is not the problem, nor is it the cause of all our ills — of gross inequality and climate-wrecking overshoot — the problem is capitalism.

In theory it is barely possible to imagine that the leading governments of the world will soon make a joint effort to drastically reduce fossil fuel use, end capitalism, and begin a program of planned #Degrowth while making #ClimateJustice a high priority.
It's possible, but I'd say the chances of that happening are very slim.
So what can we do? In general, I think it might be best to begin learning as much as possible about the process of potential societal collapse. How and when could things start to unravel where you live?

What is important in life?
Is it to have the best car and the newest smartphone, or is it to be happy?
Is it to have a high-paid job, or is it to spend time with loved ones and enjoy the beauties of nature?
For critics, degrowth is not very appealing. According to them, it means impoverishment, restraint, scarcity, austerity, or recession. It is seen as a project to reduce the overall prosperity of individuals and societies.
In contrast, I argue that degrowth aims to achieve abundance, prosperity, and richness.
Degrowth is about building societies in which everyone is rich – without much material.
It is impossible to promise everyone to achieve high levels of consumption. Indeed, that would lead to environmental and societal catastrophes. It would also be extremely unfair, as those most suffering from environmental degradation are already the most marginalised.
Instead, degrowth aims to achieve an abundance that does not entail high levels of consumption: a ‘frugal abundance’.

The complete dismissal of entire populations as sub-human is a stark reminder that the horrors of the transatlantic slave trade and colonial genocide of indigenous populations by Western empires have never left us. It is also a frightening reflection of the priorities of the world’s rulers as we watch the planet’s life-support systems erode due to ecological collapse.
The ruling class’s desire to preserve a society that is free from ecological breakdown extends only to a future reserved for themselves – a minority of multi-millionaires and billionaires. Meanwhile, what we are witnessing in Gaza is a sign of what is to come in an era of growing ecological breakdown brought on by a capitalist world order that is no longer fit for purpose, if it ever was.
As Colombian president Gustavo Petro declared at the COP28 climate conference in Dubai last year: “Gaza is the mirror of our immediate future.”
