Ein Schmetterling sitzt auf einem grünen Blatt. Der Betrachter sieht seine fast vollständig aufgeklappten Flügel von schräg hinten und oben.
Die Grundfarbe der Flügel ist außen schwarz und geht nach innen zu langsam in ein dunkles grau-braun über. Über alle vier Flügel erstreckt sich ein weißes Band, das sich bei ausgebreiteten Flügeln zu zwei Viertelkreises zusammenfügt. Auf den hinteren Flügeln ist das Band in mehrere, von außen nach innen schmaler werdende Teilbänder unterteilt.
Auf den Vorderflügeln ist jeweils ein schwarzer Augenfleck angeordnet, der von einer grau-braunen und einer schwarzen Linie eingefaßt wird. Innerhalb des Augenflecks befinden sich drei weiße Tupfen, die wie Lichtreflexionen wirken.

The bramble bushes growing in our laurel hedge were the centre of attention for the butterflies this morning - these small skippers were quite happily hunting for nectar on the bramble flowers. I hadn't realized how small they really were until I zoomed in and could see that they barely covered the width of a bramble flower petal.

I feel like I’ve had to explain the importance of nettles for caterpillars a lot lately.

If you want butterflies you need to leave some nettles to grow.

Sounds vaguely like an inspirational quote.

Also, please don’t cut back all the nettles.

The MUPPET MOTHS are back!

More professionally known as Elephant Hawkmoths, one of our most vibrantly coloured moths, albeit one of the smaller hawkmoths. With its bright colour and fuzzy felt appearance, it resembles a character from the Muppets

Thunderstorms usually = good mothing and last night brought a few out. A bit of a flight exodus as I tried to manoeuvre myself for moth inspection, so lost a few whose identity shall never be known. What stayed included...

A 2cm chunky, triangular moth on a finger. It is dusty white with miniscule black peppering. It has a pentagonal shaped furry top of head and two wiry antennae pointing left and right. Its wings are slightly parted and flapping, so a) exposing a grey furry abdomen and b) blurring in the wing corners

4) Minor agg (possibly Tawny Marbled - these are very tricky to tell apart and only a genital examination would say for sure - but I do not kill moths)

Overhead shot of large 5cm hawk moth. It is largely a warm grey with hints of olive green. It has a thick chunky abdomen which curls up at the end. Its forewings (overwing) extend down and back like aeroplane wings but are squared off at the bottomedge. Its hindwings (underwing) fan out horizontally from near its head and therefore sit forward of the back-swooping forewings. The arrangement of the wings gives the moth the impression of being rather square in shape. It has very visible thin yellow-orange veins. and two very thick creamy white antennae

In the Meiji Jingu garden is an iris bed, set in a water fed marsh/mud, with #Japanese pond #turtles swimming around in the channels that delimit the plantings. The #iris garden cost 3€ to enter, which is just to help pay the upkeep of that particular area of the park. The irises flower in June, and were quite simply magnificent. #Butterflies and #dragonflies were flitting and fluttering around. A real gem in my book. We also went and visited a well that was captured in the #Edo period, and a small lake brimming with water lilies.

Sometimes, you just happen to miss one!

Packing away the moth box and found this little fella on the side of a shallow planter. It is a welcome to 2025 and my first sighting this year of:

TREBLE BROWN SPOT - a geometer (read: flat and butterfly-like).

A small 1.5 cm wide flat moth, butterfly shaped. It is a pale cream colour with three distinctive brown spots close to the left and right wing edges. Above the spots, in each wing corner is a brown smudge and these are all separated from the central part of the wing by a wavy brown line. On the other side of that line, in the central cream section of wing, there are four tiny brown diamond dots, two on each wing. Finally, the wing edges are heavily fringed. The moth sits on a black, scratched plastic planter.

Weather not been great for mothing recently. Took a punt last night after the heavy rain and whilst not numerically or diversity significant, I did attract a very handsome EYED HAWK MOTH. He wouldn't readily show me eyes on the underwing, until he was flapping for take-off (hence a bit of blur in photo 2)
