@timkmak i humbly dare remind your and ms. applebaum's readers that ukrainian democratic traditions go back to the beginning of the 18th century, maybe earlier:

just to put this into perspective: at that time, most of the readers' ansestors were either slaves, slave owners or bowed to the british kings and queens.
