Hot Topic December 19, 2024. Climate focus: Northeast. The Northeast saw many areas of improvement this week. Abnormal dryness or drought improved from 96.97% to 88.66%. Moderate drought or worse dipped from 64.96% to 46.02%. Severe drought or worse declined from 23.31% to 17%. Extreme drought dropped slightly from 3.96% to 2.37%.

To provide one example of regional drought impacts, a Dec. 8 historical reenactment of the Continental Army crossing the Delaware in Pennsylvania did not involve the actual river crossing due to low water levels. A second reenactment on Christmas day is looking more promising as the area continues to receive moisture. (2/2)
