After a dry past few weeks, abnormal dryness and drought continue to spread across the Northeast, now covering 93.65% of the region. Extreme drought conditions emerged in southern New Jersey this week.

The dryness and drought have contributed to wildfires in New Jersey, Connecticut and New York. On Wednesday, a wildfire in New Jersey prompted evacuations.

Hot Topic November 7, 2024. Climate focus: the Northeast. This week, coverage of abnormal dryness or drought expanded from 78.99% to 93.65% in the Northeast. Moderate drought or worse grew from 38.28% to 56.56%. Severe drought or worse increased from 15.23% to 19.87%. Extreme drought grew slightly from 4.82% to 6.64%. Exceptional drought stayed the same at 0.67%.
